She has been a UCL faculty member since 1998 and served as Head of the Research Department from 2018 to 2023. Her roles also include Co-Director of Equalise: ESRC Centre for Lifecourse Health Equity and a founding member of the ESRC International Centre for Life Course Studies in Society and Health (ICLS). She co-leads UCL’s Health Equity strategy and oversees the ESRC-BBSRC Soc-B Centre for Doctoral Training in Biosocial Research.
Education: Anne holds a BA and MPH from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and a PhD from UCL (2004) using data from the MRC NSHD 1946 birth cohort. Before her academic career, she volunteered with the Peace Corps in Yemen (1991–1994).
Research Interests: Her work focuses on social determinants of health, particularly the health impacts of caregiving, workplace conditions, and life course transitions. She employs large-scale longitudinal datasets like the UK Household Longitudinal Study, ELSA, and the Millennium Cohort Study. Key themes include health equity, gender disparities in care work, and the biological mechanisms linking social roles to health outcomes.
Scientific Contributions: Her research explores how unpaid care roles (e.g., sandwich caregiving) affect mental and physical health, and how socioeconomic status influences transitions to neurocognitive disorders. Recent studies highlight the pandemic’s exacerbation of caregiving burdens and disparities in mental health among young adults.
Grants & Advising: While specific grant details are not listed, her leadership roles in ESRC-funded centers suggest extensive grant involvement. She has advised doctoral students through the Soc-B Centre for Doctoral Training, though no student names are provided. Her work bridges academia and policy, addressing health equity through interdisciplinary approaches.
Labs/Teams: She collaborates with the EUROCARE project and contributes to the WorkLife blog. Her affiliations include Child of Our Time and the ICLS, emphasizing her focus on lifecourse health equity across multiple projects.
