Professor Rebecca Hardy is a Professor of Epidemiology and Medical Statistics at Loughborough University. Previously at University College London (UCL) since 2012, she held roles including Programme Leader for the MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing and Director of CLOSER, an ESRC-funded initiative enhancing longitudinal study impact. Her work focuses on life course epidemiology, cardiovascular aging, and women’s health using large-scale cohorts like the MRC National Survey of Health and Development (NSHD).
Educationally, she holds a BSc in Mathematics (University of Sheffield), MSc in Medical Statistics (University of Leicester), and PhD in meta-analysis methods (London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine). She is a Fellow of the Faculty of Public Health and retains an Honorary Professorship at UCL.
Her research explores how early-life factors (e.g., adverse childhood experiences, growth patterns) influence aging-related outcomes like cardiovascular disease, menopause timing, and cognitive decline. Notable studies investigate air pollution’s effects on cognition, sleep trajectories and Parkinson’s disease, and intergenerational health impacts of maternal smoking. She emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, particularly in harmonizing longitudinal data across populations.
Key awards include FFPH distinction and sustained leadership roles in major cohorts. Her work bridges epidemiological methods with policy-relevant insights, addressing societal challenges like workforce participation during menopause and obesity trajectories. Ongoing projects explore epigenetic aging biomarkers and cardio-metabolic health disparities across socioeconomic groups.
