Professor Anne Gerritsen holds dual academic affiliations: she is a Professor in the History Department at the University of Warwick (UK) and holds a continuing informal role as Chair of Asian Art at Leiden University (Netherlands). Her research focuses on material culture, global history, and early modern trade networks, particularly centered on China and its transnational connections. She earned a PhD from Harvard University (2001) and an MA from Leiden University.
Her expertise spans Asian art, Ming Dynasty studies, and the global circulation of commodities like porcelain and medicinal materials. Key projects include the Wellcome Trust-funded 'Therapeutic Commodities' initiative and AHRC-funded studies on Jingdezhen ceramics. She is a Fellow of the British Academy and member of Academia Europaea, reflecting her scholarly impact.
Publications include The City of Blue and White (2020) and edited volumes on global material culture. Her work bridges historical analysis with interdisciplinary approaches, addressing topics like ceramics manufacturing, diplomatic gifts, and the socio-political roles of therapeutic commodities. Awards include the American Ceramic Circle Book Award (2015) for her contributions to ceramic studies.
