Shawn Spangler is an Associate Professor and Ceramics Area Chair at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He holds an MFA from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University and a BFA from Pennsylvania State University. His work bridges historical ceramic traditions, digital technology, and functional design, exploring themes of authorship, collaboration, and cultural identity. Spangler's practice combines wheel-thrown porcelain with complex sculptural forms influenced by Koryo and Song dynasty aesthetics, alongside digital fabrication processes.
