Annamaria (Anita) Gal is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Applied Sciences, University of Brighton, affiliated with the Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Devices. Her research focuses on the tumour microenvironment (TME), particularly the role of tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs) in cancer progression and metastasis.
Her work explores TAM plasticity, heterogeneity, and recruitment, alongside the impact of cytokines, chemokines, and inflammation on TME dynamics. She utilizes 3D bioprinted models and investigates epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in tumour dissemination. She supervises projects targeting TAM subsets for therapeutic applications.
- Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2018)
- Fulbright Scholarship recipient (1998–1999)
- Organizer of the biannual Brighton Tumour Microenvironment Conference
Her research activities span triple-negative breast cancer, melanoma, and bladder cancer, emphasizing predictive biomarkers and novel therapeutic strategies. She contributes extensively to peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings.
