Anna Scalfaro is an Associate Professor in the Department of the Arts at the University of Bologna, affiliated with the School of Arts and Cultural Heritage under the academic discipline PEMM-01/C Musicology and Music History.
Education:
- Graduated in piano with honours from the "F. Torrefranca" Conservatory in Vibo Valentia
- Specialised in chamber music at the "Incontri col Maestro" Academy in Imola
- Cum laude degree in DAMS Music (2003) from University of Bologna, thesis on Luigi Dallapiccola
- PhD in Musicology and Musical Heritage (2007) from University of Bologna
Research Interests: Her work centers on contemporary music history and music pedagogy, with specialized focus on music dissemination in media, historical development of music education in Italian schools, 20th-century Italian chamber opera production, and intersections between music, cinema, and social inclusion. She examines cultural transmission through broadcast media like RAI TV and explores music's role in educational frameworks.
Teaching and Institutional Roles: Currently teaches Philosophy and Musical Aesthetics for DAMS, coordinates the Music Laboratory, and delivers courses on History of Popular Music and History of Music in Media for the Master's in Disciplines of Music and Theatre. Directs the first-level Master in Music Production and Promotion, serves on the Board of Tutors for the Upper College (2019-2026), and participates in quality assurance committees for music-related degree programs.
Research Grants and Projects: Led a three-year research grant on Italian school music education history and an annual grant on RAI TV's music dissemination. Scientific head of the "Digital applications of music within the CRICC" project (PRAP Regional Programme), member of the PRIN 2017 project on art music audience formation in Italy, and contributor to the "Music pedagogy as social inclusion tool" initiative (Alma Idea Grant Senior).
Academic Collaborations: Active in DAMSLab for urban cultural valorization and Soffitta Center for theatrical promotion.
