Elena Cervellati is an Associate Professor at the University of Bologna's Department of the Arts, affiliated with the Faculty of Letters and Philosophy. She teaches History of Dance and Dance Theories, coordinating the Theories and Practices of Italian Dance research group and managing the European branch of the Kazuo Ohno Archive. She co-directs the journal Danza e ricerca with Elena Randi, founded by Eugenia Casini Ropa. Her research focuses on 19th-century ballet, post-1970s Italian contemporary dance, and intersections between dance and textual expression. She has organized international projects like Dancing in Your Shoes (Creative Europe, 2020–2023) and participated in transnational research collaborations such as Choreoart and HdD Herméneutiques de la Danse. Previously, she managed the dance company Compagnia Abbondanza/Bertoni (1997–2002) and curated dance events for Centro La Soffitta since 2008.
Education: Ph.D. in Theatrical and Cinematographic Studies (University of Bologna), with a research focus on performing arts documentation and creation methodologies.
Key Projects: Co-led the Patrimoni culturali (s)velati project (2018–2020) exploring marginalized identities in Mediterranean music and ritual, and contributed to the La disciplina coreológica en Europa initiative (2008–2009).
Labs/Teams: Active in the DamsLab at the Department of Arts, collaborating with international partners like the Kazuo Ohno Archive and Yorkshire Dance.
