Maria Semi is an Associate Professor at the Department of the Arts, University of Bologna. Her research focuses on 18th-century music aesthetics, the interplay between music and other disciplines, and global intellectual history. She holds a PhD in Musicology from the University of Bologna (2009) and has held fellowships at institutions including the University of Turin (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship), Lichtenberg-Kolleg (Göttingen), and the University of Paris 7. Her work bridges historical musicology with philosophy, examining topics like Rousseau's Dictionnaire de musique, Enlightenment aesthetics, and the role of music in forming cultural identities.
She teaches courses on musical aesthetics and philosophy in both undergraduate and graduate programs at the University of Bologna. Her research has led to international conference participation and organizational roles, including the 2018 conference Challenges to the History of 18th-Century Musical Aesthetics. She is also active in academic publishing, serving on editorial boards for Musicorum, Il Saggiatore Musicale, and Musica Docta.
Her recent publications explore themes such as music historiography, the global dimensions of Enlightenment thought, and interdisciplinary approaches to music's role in societal contexts.
