Dr. Anna Fishbein is an Adjunct Lecturer in the Department of Pediatrics, Division of Allergy and Immunology at the Feinberg School of Medicine, Northwestern University. She maintains clinical affiliations with Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and participates in multiple research centers including the Center for Circadian and Sleep Medicine and the Institute for Public Health and Medicine.
Her educational background includes:
- MD from University of Chicago (2007)
- Residency in General Pediatrics at Northwestern University (2010)
- Fellowship in Allergy and Immunology at Northwestern University (2012)
- Board Certification in Allergy & Immunology and Pediatrics
As a pediatric physician scientist, Dr. Fishbein specializes in circadian immunology and its role in atopic inflammation. She has defined "nocturnal eczema" to describe nighttime exacerbation of atopic dermatitis, recognizing that over 3 million school-aged children in the US suffer from sleep disturbance related to eczema. Her research focuses on:
- Determining circadian rhythms of inflammation and skin barrier in nocturnal eczema
- Targeting mechanisms driving nocturnal disease flares
- Improving assessment and treatment of sleep disturbance in atopic dermatitis
Her recent publications reveal a strong interdisciplinary approach combining immunology, dermatology, and sleep medicine to address pediatric atopic conditions. The research spans clinical decision tools, circadian biology in skin function, metabolomics, and biomarker discovery for treatment response.
Dr. Fishbein's clinical expertise encompasses:
- Atopic dermatitis/eczema
- Sleep disturbances in atopic conditions
- Hereditary angioedema
- Urticaria
- Food allergy
- Allergic rhinitis
- Asthma
She leads an expert team across sleep medicine, circadian research, dermatology, and allergy & immunology at Northwestern University, working toward developing circadian-based therapeutics to personalize treatment for children with nocturnal eczema.
