Anil Markandya

Anil Markandya is a distinguished Professor and Ikerbasque Distinguished Professor at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), part of the University of the Basque Country. He specializes in environmental economics and climate change, leading the 'Adaptation Lab' research line. His work integrates multidisciplinary approaches to address climate challenges, emphasizing sustainable development, environmental valuation, and policy design.

Markandya holds a PhD in Environmental Economics from the London School of Economics (1975) and has held academic positions at institutions including Princeton University, Harvard University, and University College London. He served as BC3’s Executive Director since 2008 and contributed to the IPCC Fourth Assessment Report, which won the Nobel Peace Prize (2007). His research spans climate policy, energy systems, and biodiversity economics, with over 300 publications.
