Anil Markandya is a distinguished Professor and Distinguished Ikerbasque Professor at the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3), part of the University of the Basque Country. He has held academic roles at institutions including Princeton, Berkeley, Harvard, University College London, and Bath University. As Executive Director of BC3 since 2008, he leads multidisciplinary research on climate change, environmental economics, and sustainable development.
Markandya earned an MSc in Econometrics from the London School of Economics (1968) and a PhD in Environmental Economics (1975). His work bridges academia and policy, focusing on climate policy, environmental valuation, energy transitions, and green accounting. He co-authored landmark studies like Blueprint for a Green Economy and contributed to the IPCC’s 3rd and 4th Assessment Reports, which won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.
His research emphasizes climate change impacts on health, energy systems, and biodiversity. Notable awards include the World Energy Council’s 2007 prize for climate regulation, recognition as a top sustainability thinker (Cambridge, 2008), and leadership roles in global organizations like the European Association of Environmental & Resource Economists (EAERE).
Key publications address SDG integration, climate finance, and health co-benefits of climate policies. He advises international bodies (e.g., World Bank, EU) and governments on energy, environment, and development strategies. His work spans 50+ years, with over 300 peer-reviewed articles and influential policy briefs.
