Dr Angus Stewart is a Senior Lecturer in the School of History at the University of St Andrews, affiliated with the Institute of Medieval Studies and Centre for Anatolian and East Mediterranean Studies. He holds a PhD from St Andrews (2000), following MA (1994) and MLitt (1996) degrees in Mediaeval and Islamic History from the same institution.
His research focuses on diplomatic and cultural encounters in the Eastern Mediterranean during the 13th century, particularly Mamluk-Armenian relations, Mongol expansion, and cross-cultural interactions between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. He teaches modules on medieval Europe, Middle Eastern history, medieval fortifications, and Mamluk Sultanate history at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
Recent work includes analyses of Mongol reception in Western regions, Armenian mediation in Frankish-Mongol alliances, and Mamluk political dynamics. His publications span books, journal articles, and edited chapters, with a focus on primary source analysis and interdisciplinary historical methodologies.
Stewart advises PhD candidate Quinn Bouabsa Marriott and actively contributes to postgraduate programs in Middle Eastern History, Iranian Studies, and Medieval Studies. His work engages with themes of cultural hybridity, military strategy, and textual historiography in medieval contexts.
