Van den Bent's scholarly output demonstrates significant expertise in both medieval Islamic history and contemporary Middle Eastern studies. Her recent publications show a thematic progression from medieval Mongol-Mamluk relations toward contemporary Egyptian politics and society following the Arab Spring. Her work often bridges historical analysis with contemporary political and social issues in the Middle East.
Her research methodology combines textual analysis of historical sources with contemporary field research and media analysis. She has contributed to understanding how historical narratives shape modern political discourse in the Middle East, particularly regarding Western representations in Egyptian public debate after the fall of Mubarak.
