Anthony Quickel is a postdoctoral scholar (rank: Researcher) at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG) in Department III: Artifacts, Action, Knowledge. His research focuses on the historical understanding and utilization of metals and minerals in medieval Egypt, particularly during the Mamluk Sultanate, as part of the "Metals, Minerals, and the Life Cycle" Working Group. He has contributed to projects like EGYLandscape and DYNTRAN, investigating environmental transformations and knowledge production in pre-modern Egypt and the Eastern Mediterranean.
- Education: PhD from Philipps-Universität Marburg, Master’s from the American University in Cairo.
- Research: Examines intersections of natural materials, scientific practices, and cultural history in medieval Islamic contexts.
- Teaching: Adjunct instructor of Middle East History at the American University in Cairo (2016–2021).
- Publications: Author of articles on Egypt’s environmental history and co-editor of a forthcoming volume on nature during the Mamluk Sultanate.
