Professor Dame Angela McLean is a Senior Research Fellow in Theoretical Life Sciences at All Souls College, University of Oxford, and Director of the Institute for Emerging Infections at the Oxford Martin School. Her academic career includes roles as Professor of Mathematical Biology (2000–2008) and Head of Mathematical Biology at the Institute for Animal Health (1998–2000). She holds a B.A. in Mathematics from Somerville College, Oxford and a Ph.D. in Biology from Imperial College London, with postgraduate studies at UC Berkeley.
Her research focuses on mathematical modeling of infectious disease dynamics, immunology, and evolution, with notable contributions to understanding HIV treatment dynamics and viral evolution. Awards include the Royal Society Fellowship (2009), Gabor Medal (2011), and Weldon Memorial Prize (2018).
- Key roles: Royal Society Council Member (2013–2016), DEFRA Science Advisory Council (2006–2011), and World Economic Forum panellist (2012).
- Publications span HIV reservoirs, radiation health impacts, and pollinator conservation, with a current H-index of 47.
Her work bridges basic science and policy, addressing global health challenges like emerging infections and radiation risk assessment. She collaborates with clinicians and policymakers to translate mathematical models into actionable strategies.
