Professor Angela McLean serves as Professor of Mathematical Biology in the Department of Biology at the University of Oxford and Senior Research Fellow at All Souls College. She leads the Oxford Martin Programme on Pandemic Genomics and Oxford Martin Programme on Collective Responsibility for Infectious Disease while directing the Institute for Emergent Infections of Humans, focusing on interdisciplinary approaches to global health threats.
Her research centers on mathematical modeling of infectious disease evolution and transmission dynamics, encompassing within-host immune responses and population-level spread. She pioneers the integration of natural science evidence into policy formulation through the Oxford Martin School Restatements, which disentangle scientific consensus from policy debates in contentious areas like pesticides, radiation, and endocrine disruptors.
Her publication portfolio demonstrates expertise spanning environmental toxicology, HIV dynamics, and pollinator health, with recurring themes in mathematical epidemiology and evidence-based policy. Recent work emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration across biology, mathematics, and public health to address emerging infections.
Key scientific honors include:
- DBE (Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire)
- FRS (Fellow of the Royal Society)
Her research is funded by the James Martin 21st Century School, supporting initiatives that bridge academic research and real-world policy challenges. She actively shapes pandemic preparedness strategies through leadership in Oxford's Martin Programmes and the Institute for Emergent Infections of Humans.
McLean's teams specialize in pandemic genomics, collective responsibility frameworks for infectious diseases, and emergent infection modeling, fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration to mitigate global health risks through mathematical biology and evidence synthesis.
