Martin A. Nowak is a Professor of Mathematics and Biology at Harvard University, holding joint appointments in the Departments of Mathematics and Organismic and Evolutionary Biology. He has been Director of the Program for Evolutionary Dynamics (2003–2020). His research focuses on evolutionary dynamics, including cooperation evolution, virus infection dynamics, cancer genetics, and game theory. Key contributions include mechanisms of HIV disease progression, drug resistance evolution, and cancer driver/passenger mutation analysis.
Education: Born in Vienna (1965), he studied Biochemistry and Mathematics at the University of Vienna (Diploma thesis with Peter Schuster; PhD under Karl Sigmund, graduating sub auspiciis praesidentis rei publicae). As an Erwin Schrödinger Scholar at Oxford, he worked with Robert May, becoming a Wellcome Trust Senior Research Fellow (1992) and Professor of Mathematical Biology at Oxford (1997). He joined Harvard in 2003.
Research Interests: Mathematical biology, evolutionary game theory, infectious disease dynamics, cancer evolution, indirect reciprocity, and language evolution. He pioneered virus dynamics, mathematical oncology, and evolutionary graph theory, proposing cooperation as a third evolutionary principle beyond mutation and selection.
Awards: Weldon Memorial Prize (1996), Akira Okubo Prize (1999), David Starr Jordan Prize (2001), Henry Dale Prize (2003), Fannie Cox Teaching Prize (2016). Honorary doctorates from Alexandru Ioan Cuza University (2010) and Dominican School of Philosophy and Theology (2015). Elected to the Austrian Academy of Sciences (2001).
His work spans 500+ papers and 4 books, with major contributions to evolutionary safety of therapies, cancer genomic analyses, and game-theoretic cooperation models. He explores evolutionary mechanisms in healthcare, ecology, and sociocultural systems.
