Martin Kerndler is a Senior Researcher at the Economica Institute of Economic Research since October 2023. Previously, he held positions as an Assistant Professor (non-tenure track) and University Assistant at TU Wien and the University of Vienna. He completed his PhD in Economics at the Vienna Graduate School of Economics in 2019, receiving the highest academic distinction in Austria (sub auspiciis praesidentis rei publicae). His research focuses on Population Economics, Labor Economics, and Public Economics, with a strong emphasis on applied microeconometrics.
Education highlights include a PhD in Economics (2019), a Diplom-Ingenieur (MSc equivalent) in Mathematics in Economics from TU Wien (2013), and a BSc in Statistics and Mathematics in Economics (2011). He has been awarded multiple honors, including the Young Economist Award (2018 and 2019) and scholarships from the Austrian Federal Ministry. His work has been published in journals like Labour Economics and featured at conferences such as the European Association of Labour Economists.
Teaching includes courses on Dynamic Macroeconomic Modeling and Macroeconomics at TU Wien and the University of Vienna. He has supervised multiple Master’s and Bachelor’s theses, focusing on labor market dynamics and policy analysis. His research explores topics such as occupational safety, wage rigidity, and old-age unemployment.
Awards include the Honorary ring of the Austrian Federal President (2021) and the Excellence scholarship for sub auspiciis graduates. He has contributed to policy briefs and book chapters, emphasizing applied economic research with societal impact.
