Angela Ellis Paine is a Lecturer in Voluntary Sector Management at Bayes Business School, City St George's, University of London. Previously, she held roles as a Research Fellow at the Third Sector Research Centre and Health Services Management Centre at the University of Birmingham, and directed the Institute for Volunteering Research at Volunteering England. Her research focuses on voluntary sector organizations, volunteering practices, and the intersection of individuals, institutions, and multi-level contexts shaping participation. She employs qualitative and longitudinal research methods, emphasizing collaborative approaches. Notable contributions include studies on third sector health and care commissioning, pandemic responses, and voluntary action in welfare systems. She chairs the Editorial Management Board of the Voluntary Sector Review and contributes to the Voluntary Sector Studies Network.
Education: PhD in Geography (2001), BSc Geography (First Class Hons, 1997), both from the University of Wales Swansea.
Research Interests: Voluntary sector dynamics, third sector governance, participatory practices, qualitative methodologies, and policy impacts on civil society. Her work spans international, national, and local evaluations of volunteering initiatives and third sector engagement in public services.
