Justin Davis-Smith is an Associate Professor in Voluntary Sector Management at Bayes Business School (City St George's, University of London). He holds a PhD in Economic History from Loughborough University and a First Class Honours degree in Economic and Social History. His research focuses on volunteer management, leadership, and the historical evolution of voluntary action. He leads the voluntary sector masters' programme and co-founded the Centre for Modern History, developing courses on philanthropy and social purpose.
Justin has held senior roles in the voluntary sector, including Executive Director at NCVO and Chief Executive of Volunteering England. He advised the UK Government and UN on volunteering policy, and authored the volunteering strategy for the 2012 London Olympics. He is a CBE recipient (2011) for services to volunteering.
His recent work includes a centenary history of NCVO (2019) and collaborations like the 'Digitising the Mixed Economy of Welfare in Britain' project. He serves as a trustee for Royal Voluntary Service and Watford FC Community Trust, and previously chaired ESRC committees.
