Dr Karl Wilding is a part-time Lecturer in Philanthropic Studies at the University of Kent's School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research. He is affiliated with the Centre for Philanthropy, focusing on philanthropy, charitable giving, and the voluntary sector's role in civil society. Previously, he served as CEO and director of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), with a PhD exploring Victorian-era mutual aid and healthcare systems. His research includes federation models for voluntary organizations and the Moonshot Philanthropy initiative led by Professor Beth Breeze.
Teaching responsibilities include modules on philanthropy, volunteering, and social research methods at the MA level, such as 'Fundamentals of Philanthropy' and 'Research Methods for Philanthropic Studies.' He supervises doctoral students researching topics like public service delivery by the voluntary sector and social justice in UK higher education legacy income.
Wilding is a consultant across public, private, and voluntary sectors, advising on strategy, governance, and policy. He holds board roles at MyCake, Communities 1st, and Creating the Future (US). His work bridges academic research and practical policy solutions for nonprofit sustainability and social impact.
