Stephen Lee is a Senior Teaching Fellow in Voluntary Sector Management at Bayes Business School (City St George's, University of London), serving as Course Leader for the MSC in Non-Profit Fundraising & Strategic Marketing. He teaches courses on fundraising law, ethics, and marketing strategy. Previously, he held leadership roles including Chief Executive at CentreForum (awarded Think Tank of the Year 2013) and Director of the Institute of Fundraising (IOF). His research focuses on charity branding, fundraising regulation, ethical governance, and public trust in non-profits.
He holds academic appointments at Henley Business School (establishing its Voluntary Sector Management Centre) and visiting roles at South Bank, Utrecht, Erasmus, and Geneva. His work bridges academia and practice, with over 30 years in the voluntary sector, including roles at the Charities Advisory Trust and Kingston Smith Chartered Accountants. He is a Fellow of the RSA and recipient of the Professional Fundraising Lifetime Achievement Award (2000).
His publications include seminal work on non-profit branding and governance, such as the 2007 Journal of Marketing Management article co-authored with Helen Stride. A key 2017 report analyzed charity trustee effectiveness in England and Wales, contributing to legislative reforms in education, taxation, and mental health policy.
