معرفی
Andrew Wong is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology, Geography & Environmental Studies at California State University, East Bay (CSUEB). His research focuses on the intersection of language ideologies, sociolinguistics, and cultural studies, with particular attention to Hong Kong's linguistic landscape post-1997. He previously led Lexicon Branding's global linguistic evaluation program, applying anthropological insights to brand naming strategies. As Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Sociolinguistics, he actively shapes discourse in his field. His work bridges academic research and industry practice, exploring topics like translanguaging, media influence on language, and the sociopolitical dimensions of linguistic authenticity.
Research interests include the mediatization of language, the role of transliteration in cultural identity, and the interplay between language and queer identity (e.g., 'tongzhi' terminology). Recent projects examine how Hong Kong Mandarin and Cantonese are ideologized in contemporary discourse, reflecting broader sociopolitical tensions. His publications span sociolinguistic theory, applied linguistics in marketing, and critical analyses of language policy.
Andrew's academic contributions are evident in over 30 peer-reviewed articles since 2000, including foundational works on raciolinguistics and the semiotics of simplified Chinese script. He emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, integrating ethnography, experimental methods, and critical discourse analysis.
