Andrew Smart is a Reader in Sociology at Bath Spa University’s School of Sciences, focusing on the intersection of ethnicity and biomedical science. His work addresses racialized prescribing, genetic ancestry testing, biobank governance, and media coverage of genetics.

Smart’s research spans medical sociology, sociology of science, race and racism, and biomedical ethics. He examines how race/ethnicity is operationalized in clinical guidelines, genetic research, and healthcare policy, with emphasis on social inclusivity, ethical implications, and evidence-based practice.
The 15 most recent publications highlight his focus on race/ethnicity in medicine, genomic science, pharmacogenetics, and health equity. Articles explore biobank governance, patient experiences of genetic testing, media narratives, and racial disparities in clinical practice.
Smart is a member of Bath Spa’s Peer Review Panel and the School of Science’s Ethics Panel. He has served as a peer reviewer for journals like Social Science and Medicine and Science, Technology and Human Values, and has been funded by the Wellcome Trust for research on topics such as racialized medicine and postgenomic ethics.
