Lesley Larkin is a Professor in the Department of English at Northern Michigan University (NMU), where she has taught since 2008. Her expertise spans American literature (1865–present), African American literature, American ethnic literatures, race and gender studies, and the intersections of literature with science and medicine.
- Education: Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Washington (2007), B.A. from Linfield College
Larkin's research focuses on how literature engages with genomic advancements and racial/gender discourses. Her recent work, Reading in the Postgenomic Age (2025), explores bionarratives in North American literature, while her first book, Race and the Literary Encounter (2015), examines strategies Black writers use to challenge racialized reading practices.
Her publications reflect trends in interdisciplinary studies, blending literary analysis with bioethics, postgenomic science, and critical race theory. Larkin actively teaches courses on postmodernism, race and speculative fiction, and literature in the genomic age.
