Andrew R. Holmes is a Professor of Modern History and Head of History at Queen's University Belfast. He holds a PhD from Queen's University Belfast and the University of St Andrews. His research focuses on the history of religion in Ireland, particularly Presbyterianism and evangelical movements from the 17th century to the present. He is the author of seminal works such as The Irish Presbyterian Mind (2018) and The Shaping of Ulster Presbyterian Belief and Practice (2006), and co-editor of The Oxford Handbook of Religion in Modern Ireland (2024). Holmes is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Higher Education Academy, and serves on editorial boards for journals like Irish Historical Studies.
Research Interests: Protestantism in Ireland since 1600, comparative evangelical Protestantism, pre-Troubles Northern Ireland religious history. Holmes has supervised numerous PhD students, including those researching topics like the Victoria Institute’s relationship between science and religion, and Scottish Presbyterian dissent.
Awards: Elected Fellow of the Royal Historical Society (2007).
Public Engagement: Holmes has contributed to BBC documentaries on Irish Presbyterianism, including the landmark series An Independent People (2013), and frequently lectures at museums and academic conferences. He chairs the Religious Studies Research Forum and organizes interdisciplinary workshops on topics like religion and AI.
