David N. Hempton is the Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor and Alonzo L. McDonald Family Professor of Evangelical Theological Studies at Harvard Divinity School. He has been at Harvard since 2007, previously serving as Dean of the Faculty of Divinity (2012–2023). His academic journey includes roles as University Professor at Boston University and Professor of Modern History at Queen’s University of Belfast. Hempton is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society and Honorary Member of the Royal Irish Academy.
Education: BA from Queen’s University Belfast, PhD from the University of St. Andrews. He has held fellowships from the Wolfson and Nuffield Foundations (UK) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (US). Notable accolades include the Gifford Lectures (2021) and an honorary Doctor of Literature from Queen’s University Belfast (2013).
Research focuses on religion's intersection with political culture, global Christian history, and evangelical theology. Key themes include religious disenchantment, Methodism’s global expansion, and the interdisciplinary study of lived religion. His prolific publications span books like Methodism and Politics in British Society (1984), Evangelical Disenchantment (2008), and Secularization and Religious Innovation (2017).
His work bridges historical analysis and theological reflection, addressing topics such as religious conflict, secularization trends, and the role of religion in modernity. Hempton’s lectures and endowed series (e.g., Cadbury, F.D. Maurice, Tate-Willson) highlight his international academic influence.
