Donald Akenson is the Distinguished University Professor and Douglas Professor of Canadian and Colonial History at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. He holds a B.A. from Yale College (1962), Ed.M. (1963), and Ph.D. (1967) from Harvard University. His expertise spans British and Irish diaspora studies, medieval history, and religious history, with a focus on the Irish diaspora and its global impacts. He served as Beamish Research Professor at the University of Liverpool (2006–2010) and editor of McGill-Queen's Studies in the History of Religion.
His research challenges traditional historiographical assumptions, particularly regarding Irish Protestant migration and the intersections of religion, identity, and colonialism. Key works include Surpassing Wonder (1998), God's Peoples (1992), and Exporting the Rapture (2018). Akenson has received prestigious awards like the Guggenheim Fellowship (1984), Grawemeyer Award (1992), and Molson Prize (1996). He has held honorary doctorates from institutions in Canada, Ireland, and New Zealand.
His academic contributions extend beyond writing to editorial leadership, shaping major historical series. His teaching focuses on Irish history from 1798 to the present, emphasizing diaspora dynamics and transnational connections.
