Andrew R. Graybill

Andrew R. Graybill is a Professor of History at Southern Methodist University (SMU), where he also serves as Director of the William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies (since 2011) and Faculty-in-Residence at Ware Residential Commons (since 2019). Previously, he held roles at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, including Associate Professor of History (2008–11) and Director of the Program in Nineteenth-Century Studies (2009–11). He has been recognized with prestigious awards such as the Texas Institute of Letters Membership (2020) and the Labriola Center American Indian National Book Award (2014).

His research focuses on the North American West, emphasizing continental expansion, borders, race, violence, and environmental history. Key works include Policing the Great Plains (2007), Bridging National Borders in North America (2010), and The Red and the White (2013). Current projects include co-authoring The Indian Wars for North America: A Very Short Introduction with Ari Kelman.

Graybill’s academic leadership includes editing the David J. Weber Series in the New Borderlands History for the University of North Carolina Press. His editorial work and fellowships, such as the NEH Faculty Fellowship (2010–11), reflect his commitment to advancing transnational historical scholarship.
