Cathleen D. Cahill is Professor of History and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at The Pennsylvania State University, holding the Walter L. Ferree and Helen P. Ferree Professorship in Middle-American History. She serves as Acting Director of the George and Ann Richards Civil War Era Center, focusing on social history that examines how race, nationality, class, and age shape women's working and political lives through movements for work, play, and politics.
Her research centers on marginalized women's histories, particularly Indigenous, African American, and women of color experiences in U.S. history. She investigates suffrage movements beyond dominant narratives, U.S. Indian Service dynamics, and Indigenous urbanization, emphasizing how mapping women's spatial movements reveals their presence in unexpected historical contexts and challenges traditional periodizations.
Cahill's publications demonstrate consistent engagement with intersectional analysis across time periods, connecting citizenship struggles, labor politics, and sovereignty debates. Her work bridges Indigenous studies, women's history, and urban studies, frequently highlighting transnational connections and the role of federal institutions in shaping racialized gender experiences in America.
Her notable awards include:
- Charles Redd Center Fellowship Award in Western American History (2018)
- UNM Feminist Research Institute, Faculty Research Grant (2015)
- Newberry Short-Term Fellowship, Newberry Library, Chicago (2013-2014)
- Labriola Center American Indian National Book Award for Federal Fathers and Mothers (2012)
- Finalist for the Weber-Clements Book Prize (2012)
- Bill and Rita Clements Fellowship, William P. Clements Center for Southwest Studies (2009–2010)
Cahill's academic service includes chairing the steering committee for the Coalition for Western Women’s History and serving on editorial boards for the Journal of the Gilded Age & Progressive Era and the University of North Carolina Press’ Gender and American Culture Series, demonstrating active leadership in shaping scholarly discourse.
As Acting Director of the George and Ann Richards Civil War Era Center, Cahill fosters interdisciplinary research on 19th-century America while leading collaborative initiatives through the Coalition for Western Women’s History to expand narratives of women's political engagement across regional and racial lines.
