Raúl A. Ramos is an Associate Professor of US and Chicano/a History at the University of Houston's Department of History (College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences), serving as Director of Graduate Studies. He holds an A.B. in History and Latin American Studies from Princeton University (1989) and a Ph.D. in History from Yale University (1999). His research focuses on ethnic/national identity formation, borderlands history, and colonial processes. Current projects explore Mexican Independence celebrations in the American Southwest during the 1910 centennial. He has received the 2009 T.R. Fehrenbach Award for his book Beyond the Alamo. Formerly an assistant professor at the University of Utah, he was also a Clements Center Fellow at Southern Methodist University (2000-2001).
Teaching emphasizes Chicano/a History to 1910, Texas history to 1865, borderlands studies, and the American West. Courses analyze colonization, social formations, migrations, and cultural change. He co-edited Recovering the Hispanic History of Texas (2010) and contributed to volumes on transnational border history and Tejano communities. His work bridges colonial, borderlands, and ethnic studies with transnational frameworks.
