He leads the Center for Brain Health Medicines at the Harrington Discovery Institute. His research focuses on neurodegeneration, neuropsychiatric disorders, and developing neuroprotective therapies for conditions like Alzheimer's disease and traumatic brain injury (TBI).
Dr. Pieper earned his MD and PhD in Neuroscience from Johns Hopkins University, followed by residency and internship there. His lab investigates translational strategies to combat neurodegeneration, emphasizing tauopathy, mitochondrial dysfunction, and neuroinflammation.
Key achievements include the Staglin Family Rising Star Research Award and election to the American Society for Clinical Investigation. His recent work explores AI-driven drug discovery, P7C3 compounds for TBI, and neuroprotective mechanisms like biliverdin reductase and hydrogen sulfide signaling.
Lab members include graduate students (e.g., Emiko Miller, Preethy Sridharan) and postdoctoral fellows (e.g., Kalyani Chaubey), focusing on projects like cystic fibrosis-related neurodegeneration and Alzheimer's pathophysiology. Collaborations extend to network medicine and endophenotype-based therapeutic discovery.
