Andrew A. Pieper is a Professor at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine, holding joint appointments in Psychiatry, Neurosciences, and Pathology. He is an Investigator at the University Hospitals Harrington Discovery Institute and directs the Center for Brain Health Medicines. His research focuses on neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Alzheimer's, and developing neuroprotective therapies. Dr. Pieper leads the Pieper Lab, which investigates translational strategies to preserve and restore brain health. He is recognized for discovering the P7C3 neuroprotective compound class and has been honored with the 2023 John S. Diekhoff Award for mentoring. He also serves as Associate Director of the Medical Scientist Training Program.
- Affiliations: Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center, Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, Harrington Discovery Institute.
- Key Roles: Director of Center for Brain Health Medicines, Principal Investigator, Medical Educator.
His research spans neuropsychiatry, neurodegeneration mechanisms, and translational neuroscience. Recent work includes studying tauopathy in neurodegenerative diseases and the role of microglia in Alzheimer's pathology. Dr. Pieper's lab integrates genetic, pharmacological, and computational approaches to identify therapeutic targets. He has contributed over 100 peer-reviewed publications and holds leadership roles in multiple academic initiatives.
- Research Interests: Neuroprotection, Alzheimer's disease, traumatic brain injury, neuroregenerative strategies, translational drug discovery.
- Lab Members: Includes graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and clinical trainees focusing on neuroscience and neurology.
Dr. Pieper's awards reflect his contributions to mentoring and scientific innovation. His P7C3 compounds have advanced understanding of neuronal survival mechanisms and are under investigation for clinical applications in neurodegenerative disorders.
