Dr. Andrew Needham is a Lecturer in Early Prehistory and Experimental Archaeology at the University of York's Department of Archaeology. His academic journey includes a BSc, MSc, and PhD from the University of York, all focused on prehistoric archaeology. He has held roles such as Associate Lecturer, Post-Doctoral Researcher, and British Academy Early Career Fellow, leading projects like the Ornaments on the Edge study of Mesolithic personal ornaments.
His research spans Palaeolithic and Mesolithic lifeways, experimental archaeology, prehistoric art, healthcare, and Neanderthal cognition. Key projects include analyzing Magdalenian engraved plaquettes, Mesolithic ornamentation, and Palaeolithic healthcare practices. He co-directs the York Experimental Archaeology Research (YEAR) Centre and contributes to pedagogical research, emphasizing outdoor learning and MOOCs.
Andy’s teaching covers artefacts, experimental archaeology, and prehistoric art. He supervises PhD and MRes students and has mentored award-winning dissertations. Notable grants include the Craftwell Project (funded by EASY) exploring heritage crafts and wellbeing, and the British Academy Fellowship for Mesolithic ornament studies.
His work has been featured in media outlets like The Economist, Smithsonian, and Live Science, highlighting discoveries such as Neanderthal healthcare practices and the earliest Mesolithic art in Britain.
