Dr Ben Elliott is a Lecturer in Archaeology at the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), specializing in Early Prehistory with a focus on hunter-gatherer communities of Northern Europe. He holds a PhD from the University of York (2012) and has held postdoctoral positions at institutions including University College Dublin and Newcastle University. His research integrates craft theory, sensory archaeology, and human-animal relations, particularly through studies of Mesolithic antlerworking, soundscapes, and material culture.
Key projects include the Sonic Horizons of the Mesolithic collaboration with sound artist Dr Jon Hughes, the SOUNDTRACKS Leverhulme-funded project, and the Masks Unmasked initiative examining prehistoric masking practices. He co-founded the Mesolithic Archaeology and Hunter-Gatherer Research (MAHGR) group to explore decolonial approaches and contemporary relevance of hunter-gatherer studies. His teaching at UHI includes modules on archaeological science, research methods, and dissertation supervision.
Elliott’s interdisciplinary work bridges experimental archaeology, acoustic ecology, and ethnographic comparison, producing both academic publications and public installations like the REFUGIUM CD-book project. His current research critiques colonial frameworks in Mesolithic archaeology while advancing understandings of material agency and sensory engagement in prehistoric lifeways.
