Sophy Charlton is a Lecturer in Bioarchaeology at the University of York's Archaeology Department. She specializes in biomolecular archaeology, using techniques like ancient DNA (aDNA) and stable isotope analysis to study past human and animal lifeways, particularly in European early prehistory and dog domestication.
- Education:
- BSc (Hons) in Archaeology, University of York
- MSc in Biomolecular Archaeology, University of York
- NERC-funded PhD in biomolecular approaches to the British Mesolithic and Neolithic
Her research focuses on integrating biomolecular data with archaeological records to explore subsistence strategies, population movements, and environmental transitions. She has held postdoctoral roles at the Natural History Museum (London), UCL, and the University of Oxford’s PalaeoBARN lab. Current affiliations include the BioArCh group and the aDNA/Isotope research clusters at York.
Teaching includes courses on prehistoric archaeology, archaeological science, and biomolecular techniques at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
