Andrew Hurrell is the Montague Burton Professor of International Relations at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Balliol College. He has held leadership roles, including Director of the Centre for International Studies (since 2004), Head of the Department of Area and Development Studies (2001), and Director of Graduate Studies in International Relations (1996–1999). His research focuses on global governance, power transitions, and ethical dimensions of international relations. Hurrell holds a D.Phil. in International Relations from Oxford (1986).
His academic contributions include seminal works on emerging powers, global justice, and multilateralism. Awards include election to the British Academy (2011) and the Johns Hopkins Society of Scholars (2010). He has also served as Visiting Professor at the University of São Paulo (1994–1997) and the University of Brasília (2005).
Key research interests span ethical frameworks in global politics, the evolving global order, and the interplay between power dynamics and international norms. His publications analyze geopolitical shifts, climate diplomacy, and the role of norms in shaping international relations.
