Iver Neumann is the Montague Burton Professor of International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He has held senior roles including Acting Director of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) and Director of Research at NUPI (2008–2012). His academic journey includes professorships at Oslo University (Russian Studies, 2005–2010) and adjunct roles at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences. Neumann holds a Dr. Philos. in Social Anthropology from Oslo University (2009) and a D.Phil. in Politics from Oxford University (1992).
Research focuses on political anthropology, globalization, and diplomatic practices, with notable works analyzing European identity formation and Russian foreign policy. He has served as editor for key journals like Cooperation and Conflict and co-edits the New International Relations Series with Routledge. Honors include the Best Book in International Political Sociology Award (2012) and multiple visiting professorships globally.
His work bridges theoretical insights with empirical studies of state systems, diplomacy, and geopolitical discourses. Neumann has advised Norwegian foreign policy institutions and contributes to policy-relevant scholarship on human mobility and global governance.
