Jochen Prantl

Prof Jochen Prantl is a Professor of International Relations and Associate Dean International at the ANU College of Asia and the Pacific, housed within the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre. He previously served as Director of the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy (2015-16) and Deputy Director (International Engagement) at the Coral Bell School of Asia Pacific Affairs (2017-18). His expertise spans international security, polycentric governance, complex systems thinking, and strategic statecraft. He co-leads the Strategic Diplomacy research program with Prof Evelyn Goh and chairs the Global Transformation Initiative under the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU).

Dr Prantl holds D.Phil. and M.A. degrees from the University of Oxford, and an M.A. from the University of Bonn. His research focuses on international norm diffusion, UN Security Council dynamics, and multilateralism. Major funders include the UK Economic and Social Research Council, Australian Research Council, and the MacArthur Foundation. He has held visiting roles at Yale University, Waseda University, and the University of Brasilia, and has policy experience with the UN and EU Delegation in New York.

His awards include the Zvi Meitar Research Prize (2007) and AXA Prize nomination (2008). Current initiatives include strategic diplomacy training, Earth System Governance research, and non-resident fellowships at the University of Brasilia's Earth System Governance Centre.

Key grants include the 'Strategic Policy for the Asia-Pacific in Transition' (2019-2027) and 'Strategic Diplomacy for Australian Defence' (2020-2024). His work addresses global governance challenges, crisis preparedness, and interregional policy learning between Asia and Europe.
