Richard Brabin-Smith

Dr Richard Brabin-Smith is an Honorary Professor at the Strategic & Defence Studies Centre (SDSC) within the Coral Bell School of Asia-Pacific Affairs at The Australian National University (ANU), a position he has held since January 2017. Previously, he served for 30 years in senior roles at the Australian Department of Defence, including Deputy Secretary for Strategic Policy, Chief Defence Scientist, and multiple First Assistant Secretary positions across strategic policy, international affairs, and force development. His career included pivotal roles in major reviews like the 1997 Defence Efficiency Review and the 1986 'Dibb' Review of Defence Capabilities, alongside a Pentagon secondment in the early 1980s. He holds a PhD and BSc and was awarded the AO for his contributions.

His research focuses on strategic risk management, defense policy formulation, and Asia-Pacific security dynamics.
