Dr. Heidi Wang-Kaeding serves as Lecturer in International Relations at Keele University's School of Social Sciences and Director of the International Governance and Public Policy Joint Keele-BFSU programme, having joined Keele in September 2019 after previously holding an Assistant Professor position in Asian Politics at Trinity College Dublin.
Her academic credentials include a PhD in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science (2017), where her thesis on China's role in Global Environmental Governance received Montague Burton and Goodwin Scholarships, and an undergraduate degree from Hong Kong Baptist University where she earned the 2011 Scholastic Award.
Wang-Kaeding's research integrates three core strands: global environmental governance, economic statecraft in East Asia, and the role of emotions in international politics, unified by examining how China's rise reshapes regional power dynamics and creates normative effects on multilateral governance. Her work on emotional dimensions in international relations was adapted into the award-winning documentary Black Bauhinia, and she has presented findings at venues including the European Parliament and Irish Department of Foreign Affairs.
Her publication trajectory reveals consistent focus on China's environmental foreign relations and Hong Kong's political economy, evolving toward contemporary analyses of the Russia-Ukraine war response and cultural diplomacy through political humor in Chinese media. This scholarship bridges academic rigor with public engagement through frequent media contributions.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Scholastic Award (2011)
- Montague Burton Studentship
- Goodwin Scholarship
- Award for documentary film Black Bauhinia
She supervises doctoral research in Global Environmental Governance, Affective International Relations, and Greater China Politics, supported by prior scholarship funding. Academic service encompasses co-founding the Hong Kong Studies Association, committee membership for Keele University Collaborative Provision, and peer review for journals including Environmental Politics and Government and Opposition.
Public engagement spans Al Jazeera, BBC Radio Stoke, Bloomberg, and China Dialogue, while her Keele-BFSU programme leadership demonstrates institutional collaboration in international governance education.
