Professor Michael Kaeding is University Professor of European Integration and European Politics at the Institute of Political Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Duisburg-Essen. He holds an ad personam Jean Monnet Chair and serves as Vice Dean for Research and Young Academics at the Faculty of Social Sciences. His academic work focuses on EU institutions, decision-making processes, and political participation across European member states.
Professor Kaeding's research primarily centers on European integration dynamics, EU political institutions, and voter behavior in European elections. His work examines the relationship between national politics and European integration, with particular attention to the social dimensions of political participation. He has conducted extensive research on EU agencies, the European Parliament's internal organization, comitology procedures, and the impact of EU enlargement on institutional functioning. His scholarship frequently analyzes the implementation of EU policies across member states and the evolving relationship between EU institutions and national political systems.
His recent publications reveal a strong focus on contemporary challenges facing the EU, including rising Euroscepticism, the impact of global conflicts on European politics, and persistent social inequalities in voter participation. His research increasingly examines the relationship between EU institutions and member states in the context of crises, with attention to democratic legitimacy and representation. He has made significant contributions to understanding the selection of rapporteurs in the European Parliament and the socio-economic biases in European election turnout.
