Andrew Casper is a Professor of Art History at Miami University, specializing in Renaissance and Baroque art of southern Europe, particularly religious imagery in Italy during the late 1500s and 1600s. He holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Pennsylvania (2007), an M.A. from the same institution (2003), and a B.A. in Art History and Spanish from the University of Michigan (2001). His research focuses on the Shroud of Turin, early modern devotional practices, and the work of El Greco.
His recent work examines the artistic conception of the Shroud of Turin, exploring how devotional manuals linked its imagery to divine artistry. This research culminated in his award-winning book An Artful Relic: The Shroud of Turin in Baroque Italy (2021). He also investigates El Greco’s early career and Counter-Reformation religious art, detailed in Art and the Religious Image in El Greco’s Italy (2014).
Casper’s articles and book chapters analyze the Shroud’s portrayal in early modern Europe, the authenticity debates around religious icons, and the intersection of art and theology. He has presented at major conferences, including the College Art Association and the Sixteenth Century Society, and received grants from the NEH, Fulbright, and other institutions.
His teaching awards include the 2014 Miami University Distinguished Teaching Award and a 2012 nomination for the E. Phillips Knox Award. He currently teaches courses on Renaissance and Baroque art in Europe and Latin America.
