Dr. Mark Rosen is an Associate Professor and Program Director of Undergraduate Studies at the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology, University of Texas at Dallas. He holds a Ph.D., M.A., and B.A. in History of Art and English from UC Berkeley (2004, 2001, 1993). His research focuses on early modern Italian art and cartography, particularly the Medici court's role in mapping and visual power. Key works include The Mapping of Power in Renaissance Italy (2015) and ongoing projects on bird’s-eye views in early modern Europe.
Research interests span medieval/renaissance maps, Italian art (14th–17th centuries), art-science intersections, and pilgrimage routes. He has held prestigious fellowships from NEH, Kress Foundation, and Delmas Foundation. Rosen teaches courses on Renaissance/Baroque art, Leonardo da Vinci, and interdisciplinary topics like 'Art and the Map.' He currently serves as President of the Italian Art Society (2019–2021) and Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies.
Notable presentations include lectures at Rutgers University (2019), Newberry Library (2018), and Carleton College (2017). His work bridges art history with geography, emphasizing cartography’s cultural significance. He has organized international symposia and published widely in journals like The Art Bulletin and Nuncius.
