Andrew B. Dawson is a Professor of Law and Vice Dean for Academic Affairs at the University of Miami School of Law, holding the endowed position of Judge A. Jay Cristol Professor of Bankruptcy Law. His work focuses on bankruptcy law, municipal insolvency, and the intersection of labor rights with financial distress. He leads academic affairs at the law school while maintaining a research agenda addressing federalism in municipal bankruptcy, cross-border insolvency frameworks, and labor participation in corporate reorganizations.
Professor Dawson’s research explores critical issues such as state vs. federal authority in debt adjustment, alternatives to bankruptcy for small businesses, and the role of unions in safeguarding worker interests during corporate restructuring. His scholarship has appeared in leading law reviews, including the Cardozo Law Review, Chicago-Kent Law Review, and Harvard Journal of Hispanic Policy.
His publications analyze topics like unfair discrimination in municipal bankruptcy, the dynamics of labor activism in Chapter 11 cases, and cross-border insolvency coordination. He co-authored the textbook Bankruptcy Overview: Issues, Law and Policy and edited Best of ABI 2016: The Year in Business Bankruptcy.
As Vice Dean, Dawson oversees academic programs, faculty development, and curricular innovation at the law school. His leadership positions reflect his dual commitment to advancing legal education and shaping bankruptcy policy through scholarly contributions.
