Bruce A. Markell is a Professor of Bankruptcy Law and Practice and Edward Avery Harriman Lecturer in Law at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law. Formerly a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge and academic at Florida State, Indiana, and Harvard, he specializes in bankruptcy, commercial law, and cross-border insolvency. He consults for the IMF on insolvency issues and drafted Kosovo’s bankruptcy law.

Markell’s research focuses on bankruptcy equity, fraudulent transfers, and comparative bankruptcy systems. His work bridges judicial practice, legislative reform, and international cooperation, emphasizing practical applications in corporate reorganization and small business insolvency.
Recent publications analyze fraudulent transfer laws, cross-border Chapter 15 recognition, and equitable mootness. He contributes to Collier on Bankruptcy and co-authors casebooks on contracts and secured transactions.
