Andreas M. Beyer, PhD, is a Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Physiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and co-director of the Basic and translational research program in Cardio-Oncology. His research focuses on mitochondrial dysfunction, telomerase biology, and microvascular pathophysiology in cardiovascular diseases and cancer therapy-induced toxicity.
Education: PhD in Physiology from the University of Iowa (2007). Postdoctoral training at the University of Iowa and MCW. Appointments include roles as Research Program Director for Cardiothoracic Surgery and organizer of the Cardiovascular Center Seminar Series. He is a Fellow of the American Heart Association (FAHA).
Research Interests include: mitochondrial redox signaling, non-canonical roles of telomerase in vascular health, cardio-oncology (cancer therapy-induced cardiovascular toxicity), and mechanisms of endothelial dysfunction in aging and disease. Key projects explore telomerase's mitochondrial protective functions, mitochondrial dynamics in coronary artery disease, and translational approaches to mitigate chemotherapy-induced vascular damage.
Publications: Over 80 peer-reviewed articles in journals like Circulation Research, Hypertension, and PNAS. Recent work highlights endothelial TERT's role in coronary artery disease and the clinical implications of post-COVID-19 endothelial dysfunction.
Awards: 2014 Microcirculatory Society Outstanding Young Investigator Award, 2016 FAHA designation. Active roles in editorial boards (e.g., Reactive Oxygen Species Journal) and professional societies (American Physiological Society).
Labs/Teams: Leads the Andreas Beyer Lab at MCW, mentoring graduate students and postdocs in cardio-oncology and vascular biology. Collaborates on translational projects linking basic research to clinical diagnostics and therapies.
