Professor Andrea Whittaker is a leading academic in medical anthropology at Monash University's School of Social Sciences, Faculty of Arts. She holds the position of Director of the Social and Political Science Higher Degree by Research program. Her work focuses on global medical trade and mobility, reproductive technologies, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and HIV/AIDS. She is a former ARC Future Fellow and has led numerous cross-disciplinary and international research projects, including studies on oocyte mobilities in Southern Africa, uterus transplantation ethics, and AMR survivors in Australia.
Her research spans anthropology, international public health, Asian studies, and gender studies. She has collaborated with institutions worldwide, including the University of Amsterdam, University of the Witwatersrand, and University of Texas at Austin. Key projects include investigating cross-border reproductive care and its ethical implications, as well as exploring the social burden of AMR through survivor narratives.
Whittaker has received multiple awards, including the 2022 Dean's Award and Vice Chancellor's Award for Postgraduate Supervision. She has contributed to policy consultations on AMR and serves on editorial boards for journals like Medical Anthropology. Her work addresses critical issues such as bioethics, gender equity in healthcare, and the globalization of reproductive technologies.
