Stephen Wilkinson is a Professor of Bioethics at Lancaster University, leading the Wellcome-funded Future of Human Reproduction project. A Lancaster Philosophy graduate, he returned as a professor in 2013. His research focuses on reproductive ethics, including selective reproduction, uterine transplantation, mitochondrial replacement, and commercial exploitation of the human body. He has led major grants from Wellcome, AHRC, and the British Academy.
- Education: PhD and undergraduate degree in Philosophy from Lancaster University.
Research interests include ethical issues in reproductive technologies, organ donation, surrogacy, and genome editing. His book Bodies for Sale (2003) critiques commercialization of the human body. Current projects involve interdisciplinary collaborations on human reproduction ethics. He serves on the Nuffield Council on Bioethics and editorial boards of Bioethics and Clinical Ethics.
His recent articles explore ethics of uterus transplants, medical AI, and organ donation policies. Grants include Wellcome funding for transformative research in humanities and social sciences. He advocates for equitable healthcare policies and opposes exploitative commercial practices in medicine.
