Dr. Andrea Tonner is a Senior Lecturer in Marketing at the University of Strathclyde's Strathclyde Business School. She joined the university in 2008 after a career in marketing within fast-moving consumer goods and energy sectors. Her academic background includes a PhD in Consumer Identity Construction within Food Culture (University of Strathclyde), an MBA (Heriot-Watt University), and a Master of Research in Business and Management (University of Strathclyde).
Her research focuses on Consumer Culture Theory, exploring topics such as identity and sociality through food, motherhood, and digital media. Notable projects include studies on food marketing ethics, body positivity advocacy in healthcare, and digital brand personality across platforms. She is co-convenor of the British Sociological Association Food Studies Group.
Teaching areas include Consumer Behaviour, Marketing Communications, and Brand Management, emphasizing practical industry links. Recent publications (2023–2025) address health literacy on social media, digital brand co-creation, and community approaches to food insecurity. Awards include the ESRC 3+ Studentship (2006).
Professional activities include advisory roles with Down’s Syndrome Scotland and Scottish Policy & Research Exchange. Key projects include 'Beyond the Digital Divide' (2023–2024) and 'Digital Brand Personality' (2021–present).
